Sport at St Mary’s is a major part of the girls’ lives. The orchard centre has provided fantastic facilities allowing a wide range of activities including, yoga, squash, basketball, badminton, trampolining, football and indoor hockey as well as the existing sports. There is also a fully equipped Multi gym available for the use of the older students.
There are a range of teams from A to C, allowing all the girls to participate in team matches. Regular training occurs throughout lunch times and each year group has their own individual coach. This year the 1 st hockey team has been provided with the ability to train on a floodlight hockey pitch. The 1st netball team is particularly strong after winning the Ascot School’s tournament and have been training in preparation for the County tournament. The junior teams have also been successful this year with the U16 team proving successful in their county tournament, qualifying for the south of England tournament. A small number of girls are selected for Junior Development Centres in hockey or netball each year. This is a prerequisite for selection to the County team.
Each year 3 girls represent St Mary’s in the British School Girl’s ski races every January. This is an event that has provided large successes in the past.
For girls who may not necessarily represent the school teams there are plenty of inter-house sporting events which allow everyone to have a go on the pitch. The events always prove to be exciting and provide vital house points for the house treat at the end of each term.
