The Michaelmas 2009 term was a busy one for the drama department. The Drama Captain, Clarissa Langley Coleman, directed the challenging and funny The Woman Who Cooked Her Husband by Debbie Isitt. This three-hander looked at the nature of commitment and relationships and featured Leonora Bailey and Camila Hummel from Upper VI in the female roles, and Henry Ashcroft as Kenneth, the first boy to perform in a play at St Mary’s.

The House Drama Competition, adjudicated by Julia Stafford Northcote, was won by Bedingfeld. The starting-point for all the Houses was David Bowie’s Heroes which was used as the basis for a devised play. The winner of the Best Actor Award went to Theodora Louloudis.

The first of two senior productions of the term, Steel Magnolias told the story of life for a group of women in a remote Louisiana town. It was strongly and movingly performed by a cast made up of Lower VI girls, on an impressive set representing a beauty salon. The final production of the term was Grimm Tales an adaptation by the Poet Laureate of some of the well-known stories, and presented in an inventive and highly theatrical way. All the term’s performances made full and effective use of the Rose Theatre’s adaptable and versatile stage.
