Modern Languages
The Modern Languages Department is housed in a purpose-built building which includes electronic white boards and two language laboratories, one of which incorporates the latest technology. All classrooms are equipped with satellite TV. French is a core subject and is therefore compulsory up to GCSE level. In addition, pupils are given the opportunity to sample German, Italian, Spanish and Mandarin in Year 8. They may then choose to study one of these languages as a GCSE option. Bilingual pupils may be taught separately when their needs have been assessed. Additional languages such as Mandarin, Japanese, Polish and Russian are also offered as an extra on demand. A Russian club meets once a week.
The most talented linguists are encouraged to prepare for Oxbridge in addition to their A levels. When appropriate, pupils may be entered for GCSE a year early. Many St Mary’s pupils continue with their study of languages at university. Most years some girls are offered places to read Modern Languages at Oxford or Cambridge.
Languages are a popular subject taught by a dynamic and diverse team of teachers, the majority of whom are native speakers, and by foreign language assistants. A very popular trip to France is offered to Year 8 pupils. A German trip is organised every other year. The MFL Film Society shows a variety of foreign language films and meets at least twice a term.
