Geography

The course in Years 7 to 9 is used to lay the foundation of basic skills and understanding. Fieldtrips are organised to Bracknell Forest, Sunninghill, the River Pinn and the New Forest.  From Year 10 to the U6 Geography is a popular optional subject, covering all of the most important global issues.

  • At GCSE the Edexcel A specification is followed. There are 4 units: 1. Dynamic Planet, which includes modules on tectonics, climate change, the biosphere, water world, coastal change and conflict and oceans on the edge: 2. People and the Planet, which includes modules on population dynamics, consuming resources, living spaces, making a living, changing countryside and development dilemmas: 3. Making Geographical Decisions, and 4. Researching Geography. A 4 day residential field trip to Slapton in Devon supports the work on coasts and rural change and allows the girls to collect data to produce a controlled assessment worth 25% of the final marks.
  • At AS/A2 the Edexcel specification is followed. The AS course covers the 4 themes: world at risk, going global, crowded coasts and rebranding places. A 3 day residential field trip to the Hampshire and Sussex coast and a day trip to Docklands and the 2012 Olympic site support many aspects of the course. The A2 course covers the following global issues: water conflicts, energy security and biodiversity under threat, studies them in the context of superpower geographies and bridging the development gap, then considers the possible solutions offered by technology. The girls choose a topic for an individual piece of research from either tectonic activity and hazards or consuming the rural landscape.
Once every 2 years the department organises a cultural trip to a distant destination for Years 10 to L6. The last trip was to Japan in November 2008
