The English department is made up of five full time teachers who teach English language and literature throughout the school. In Years 7 and 8, classes are taught in mixed ability groups. Setting is introduced in Year 9. At GCSE and A level the OCR examination specification is followed, while candidates taking English language AS and A2 follow the AQA specification.

There are various extra curricular activities in the department, amongst which are creative writing, trips to the theatre, lectures, visiting writers and drama groups, debating and both internal and external public speaking competitions.
