St Mary's School Ascot

St Mary's is fortunate to have a range of impressive sports facilities. There is a state of the art indoor sports complex, a 6 lane / 8 straight 400m athletics track with external field areas, two floodlit Astroturf hockey pitches - which become 21 extra tennis courts in the summer, seven tennis/netball hard courts, one grass football pitch and a 25m indoor heated swimming pool. The sports complex, the Orchard Centre, houses a fitness suite (with 16 cardiovascular machines), 2 glass backed squash courts, a mirrored ballet/ dance studio, a social area and a full sized indoor sports hall which accommodates various activities.

Sport is held to be an important part of the curriculum for all ages.  The main winter sports are hockey, netball, swimming, and gymnastics although many other sports such as football, basketball, badminton, indoor hockey and volleyball are taught as part of the afternoon of sport that each year group has.  The main summer sports are athletics, tennis, swimming and rounders. Teams are run in all age groups for netball, hockey, swimming, tennis, squash and rounders with a minimum of two teams throughout all ages and four in year 7 & 8.  Ballet, Tap, modern dance, yoga, karate, private tennis and private squash lessons can also be taken as extras.

There are seven full-time members of the department and three part-time, together with two sports assistants, four tennis coaches, one squash coach and a number of other part-time and peripatetic specialists who provide specialist coaching across our range of sports as well as personal training and specific training for individual athletic events.

Curricular activities

Curricular and extra–curricular sports activities are integrated throughout the school. Every pupil has an afternoon of sport once a week plus a single lesson.  All girls in year 7 also undertake one evening team sport coaching session and are free to take part in any additional paid activity if time allows. From year 8 girls in squads are expected to attend the evening sports coaching sessions.

The range of activities available ensures a mix of team and individual sports as well as recreational and competitive sports.
